Debate Exercise - Speaking Drills the Vermont Way - Snider
Debate Exercise - Speaking Drills the Vermont Way from Alfred Snider on Vimeo.
This is a video of University of Vermont students taking part in our speaking drill exercise. Here is how it works:
1. They stand up and are given a motion and must start speaking immediately. This helps bring out delivery problems that they have since they are trying to figure out what to say.
2. They are given a motion that is unusual and often against what they believe. Again, this brings out delivery flaws.
3. They speak for four minutes.
4. They then receive criticism from a panel, with each member of the panel focusing on one part of delivery: verbal crutches, face and eyes, voice, body and hands, etc.
5. They are given a copy of the video (with criticisms) and more motions and are told to do this again on their own speaking into their laptop cameras and watching themselves after.
Drill by Alfred Snider. For more information about the University of Vermont's debate program, the Lawrence Debate Union, see debate.uvm.edu/debateblog/LDU/The_Team.html
